Formula Student Race Competition

UoN Racing is the University of Nottingham's Formula Student team, where students are given the opportunity to manufacture and compete with an electric formula-style race car. Through collaboration and a vast range of skills, the project enables students to apply their academic knowledge while competing in the IMechE Formula Student competition.

Since relaunching its Formula Student programme, UoN Racing has continued to develop competitive electric race cars. Team members work across every stage of the project, from vehicle design to testing, gaining practical skills that complement their university studies. Competing in Formula Student UK is a great experience for students, where they can tackle complex challenges and develop knowledge for real-world solutions. The team is continuously improving and have established themselves as an ambitious competitor.

UoN Racing has been all-electric since its founding in 2016, with a philosophy built around in-house development: designing their own hub motors, gearboxes, and battery packs rather than buying them off the shelf. Their 2022 car, Bruce, ran a steel tube spaceframe chassis with a 45 kW motor and 6.5 kWh Li-Ion battery pack. Their latest car, Stella, unveiled in 2025, introduced the team's first aerodynamic package: a rear wing, side wings, and diffuser. The team's best result came in 2021, finishing 3rd overall at Formula Student UK as the top electric vehicle, and they're now working toward an all wheel drive EV.
