What is Formula Student?

Formula Student is an international engineering competition organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), where university teams design, build and compete with a single-seater race car.

The competition plays a huge role in shaping the next generation of automotive engineers across Europe, giving students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a highly competitive, real-world environment. Designing, building and refining a race car from the ground up is no small task. It demands a high level of attention to detail, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

UBRacing

We’re proud to be sponsoring UBRacing, the University of Birmingham's Formula Student team, as they continue their journey in the IMechE Formula Student competition this season. Founded in 1997, UBRacing is one of the UK’s earliest Formula Student teams, even pre-dating the official UK competition.

After placing 1st in endurance, 1st in cost, and 5th overall last season, we’re excited to support the team further and share knowledge that may help influence future design decisions. As with all Formula Student teams, our primary focus is educating the next generation of engineers across Britain, showcasing the value of load measurement and its role in driving innovation.

"Working with PCM has been fast-moving, exciting, and most of all an excellent learning experience on how to design and implement precision strain gauges for our suspension. As a student team who are largely unfamiliar with this area of engineering, we are most looking forward to learning about precision measurement, calibration, and strain gauge installation in a high performance motorsport environment."

Our Support

As part of our sponsorship, we’ll be working closely with UBRacing through a series of dedicated training days hosted at our facility. These sessions will combine both theoretical learning and practical experience, giving the team the opportunity to develop hands-on knowledge in strain gauging and load measurement techniques.

This marks the first time strain gauging will be introduced into the team’s development process. Up until now, much of their analysis has been based around theoretical calculations, but implementing real-world data acquisition will allow the team to better understand how components behave under load and use that information to support future decisions.

For us, sponsorship is about more than simply providing products or services. It’s about sharing knowledge, supporting young engineers, and helping teams gain valuable practical experience that can be carried forward into industry.

We’ll be sharing updates throughout the season as the project develops, so keep an eye out to follow the team’s progress.
