Investing Heavily In The Next Generation Of Engineers

Engineering knowledge becomes more valuable when it is shared. Through training, technical support, sponsorship, placements and collaboration with schools, colleges and universities, we give students opportunities to develop practical skills alongside academic understanding. By opening our doors and sharing our experience, we aim to help develop the engineers who will shape the industry next.

We’ve seen first-hand that test and measurement is often underrepresented in engineering education. Students can leave college or university confident in simulation and FEA, yet with far less appreciation for the value of real-world data. Historically, measurement engineering has also carried an old-school image. We want to help change that by making it more visible, engaging and exciting, while showing how modern technology is transforming what is possible.

Giving young engineers our time, sharing what we have learned and letting them get involved with real engineering can also make a lasting difference to their confidence, capability and future careers.

We’re partnering with engineering course leaders at leading universities across the UK to help weave more test and measurement into the curriculum.

We enjoy working directly with university students and giving them access to engineering experience they might not otherwise encounter during their degree. Whether through guest lectures, project support, mentoring or practical training at PCM, we try to make our knowledge genuinely accessible. We’re always happy to discuss ideas, challenge assumptions, and help students turn good theory into engineering decisions that work in the real world.

We want students to encounter test and measurement as early on in their engineering journey as possible. Hence, we’re constantly welcoming college students into PCM for placements, visits and practical experience, giving them the opportunity to work alongside our team and see modern engineering first-hand. Rather than standing back and watching, we want them asking questions, having a go and building confidence. If we can help someone discover a passion for engineering or see a career path they had not considered before, that matters to us.

We’re helping change the way Formula Student teams approach real-world testing, on a global scale. Historically, strain gauge-based technology has rarely been implemented properly or at scale across a Formula Student car. So we’re working with teams to change that by supporting with hands-on strain gauge training, technical advice and access to our facilities. Most importantly though, we give them our time. We want students to understand the complete process, make their own decisions and leave with knowledge they can carry into the rest of their careers.

The transition from education into industry is where engineering knowledge starts to become engineering judgement. It is where theory meets real components, imperfect data, practical constraints and decisions that carry genuine consequences.

By giving students exposure to the way engineering is approached in industry, we hope to make that transition a little easier. The skills and mindset developed through practical projects, testing and collaboration can stay with them throughout careers in motorsport, aerospace, defence, automotive and far beyond, and we are proud to play a small part in that journey.
