What is Formula Student?

Formula Student is an international engineering competition organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), where university teams design, build and compete with a single-seater race car.

The competition plays a huge role in shaping the next generation of automotive engineers across Europe, giving students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a highly competitive, real-world environment. Designing, building and refining a race car from the ground up is no small task. It demands a high level of attention to detail, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

Team Bath Racing Electric

Say hello to our most recent Formula Student partner, Team Bath Racing Electric (TBRe). We’re incredibly excited to work with TBRe, a talented and driven group whose attention to detail immediately stood out. It’s clear they approach the competition with a strong mindset, and we’re looking forward to supporting them as they continue to push their development forward.

For us, this is more than a one-off collaboration. We’re keen to build a lasting relationship with the team, one that grows over time as they refine their car, develop their skills, and take on new challenges. By working closely together throughout the season and beyond, we hope to play a meaningful role in their journey while demonstrating the value of our support.

Our core mission is to educate young engineers across the whole of Britain, introducing them to the fascinating world of load measurement. And who better to join us than a competitive formula student team.

We’re keen to meet TBRe in person, see the car up close, and get a better understanding of the work that’s gone into its design and build.

"It’s really exciting to be working with an industry-leading force measurement company and applying strain gauging to the car. It’ll give us a much better understanding of how forces actually move through the car and help us improve our designs going forward."

Our Support in Formula Student

As with a number of teams this season, we'll be supporting them with the implementation of strain gauging. Like many others, TBRe haven't yet had the opportunity to utilise strain gauges within their development process. Instead, this area has historically been based on theoretical calculations.

Our support will allow them to capture real-world data directly from the car, giving greater insight into how components perform under load and helping to inform more accurate design decisions. But we won't simply do the work for them. We'll be hosting dedicated training days at our facility. Here, we'll work together on key components of their car, particularly suspension components including pushrods and wishbones, successfully converting them into accurate force transducers. Through this, the team will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in strain gauging.

For us, this kind of hands-on support is what sponsorship is really about. Sharing knowledge and helping teams get the most out of their development.

We’ll be sharing updates as things progress, so keep an eye out to see how they get on throughout the season.

"Our aero package this year is the most ambitious design we've ever done, so having access to real load data is critical. With PCM's support this season, we're able to validate whether the car is actually generating the forces we’re designing for, rather than relying purely on simulation.”
