University of Birmingham Formula Student Team

UBRacing is the University of Birmingham's Formula Student team, with a history spanning almost three decades of student-led engineering and motorsport. By manufacturing and competing with a new race car each year, the students are able to gain hands-on experience while continuing a true tradition within the university.

UBRacing is one of the longest-running Formula Student teams in the United Kingdom. Throughout its history, the team has evolved from early combustion-powered vehicles to today's fully electric race cars. Beyond the technical aspects of the competition, UBRacing also takes part in the Formula Student Business Plan event, where students from different disciplines can collaborate on real-world challenges. Together, these experiences help prepare students for successful careers across the engineering and motorsport industries.

UBRacing's current car represents nearly three decades of evolution. Since the team's founding in 1997, they've designed and manufactured 29 race cars, with the designs going through many iterations over that time. They started out with a combustion car built on a steel space frame chassis, and their most recent car, UBR29, is an electric vehicle with a carbon monocoque. The switch to an electric powertrain came in 2021, and while the transition was a difficult one, the team has continued refining its EV design ever since.
