Who Is Imperial Formula Racing?

Every year, close to 200 undergraduate and postgraduate students come together to deliver Imperial Formula Racing's latest competition car. Between mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and many other disciplines, the team manages every stage of the project, from initial design concepts through to manufacturing and testing.

The Car Type

Imperial Formula Racing was founded in 2000, building IC01, which first competed in 2001 and won its class. The team has since evolved through several generations, including an early switch to electric power, before returning to a combustion powertrain in recent years. At Formula Student UK 2025, their combustion car completed the endurance event for the first time in 13 years, finishing 6th overall. The team is now developing two vehicles simultaneously for the first time in its history: refining last year's car into IFR-01b, while designing a new spaceframe for IFR-02, their 2027 entry. With around 200 members, the team recently completed shakedown and track testing ahead of returning to Silverstone.

With almost 200 students involved each year, Imperial Formula Racing is one of the largest student-led engineering projects at Imperial College London. The team's multidisciplinary approach encourages collaboration between students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, creating an environment where knowledge and ideas are shared throughout the project.
