What is Formula Student?

Formula Student is an international engineering competition organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), where university teams design, build and compete with a single-seater race car.

The competition plays a huge role in shaping the next generation of automotive engineers across Europe, giving students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a highly competitive, real-world environment. Designing, building and refining a race car from the ground up is no small task. It demands a high level of attention to detail, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

For us, this is more than a one-off collaboration. Our Support in Formula Student

As with a number of teams this season, we'll be supporting them with the implementation of strain gauging . Like many others, Team Bath haven't yet had the opportunity to utilise strain gauges within their development process. Instead, this area has historically been based on theoretical calculations.

Our support will allow them to capture real-world data directly from the car, giving greater insight into how components perform under load and helping to inform more accurate design decisions. But we won't simply do the work for them. We'll be hosting dedicated training days at our facility. Here, we'll work together on the components of their car while the team gains theoretical knowledge and practical experience in strain gauging.

For us, this kind of hands-on support is what sponsorship is really about. Sharing knowledge and helping teams get the most out of their development.

We’ll be sharing updates as things progress, so keep an eye out to see how they get on throughout the season.

Formula Student plays a huge role in shaping the next generation of automotive engineers across Europe, giving students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a highly competitive, real-world environment. About the Event

The 2026 Instrumentation, Analysis & Testing Exhibition, organised by the Engineering Integrity Society (EIS) , returns to Silverstone Race Circuit on 12th May, bringing together engineers, specialists and industry leaders across the UK. The show will host 80+ exhibitors showcasing the latest advancements in measurement, analysis and testing technologies, while providing valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and build connections. And this year we’re exhibiting.

This year marks our first time exhibiting at the IAT Exhibition, and a return to industry events in quite some time. We see this as the right moment to step forward, introduce ourselves to a wider audience, and bring a fresh perspective to the exhibition.

Bringing Theory Into Practice

Recently, we welcomed six students from the WMG Academy to our facility for a day exploring the world of load measurement and precision engineering.

The visit was designed to give students a closer look at how engineering concepts move from theory into practice. From the fundamentals of load cell design to the detailed processes involved in manufacturing and calibration , the day offered a practical insight into how our precision measurement systems are developed in a real environment.

By opening our doors to the next generation of engineers, we hope to help bridge the gap between classroom learning and industrial application, while also giving students a clearer understanding of the career pathways available within engineering.

Introducing the Fundamentals of Load Measurement

The visit began with an overview of the engineering principles behind modern load measurement systems .

Students were introduced to the core concepts that allow force and weight to be accurately measured, including material behaviour, strain gauging and the process that converts mechanical stress into measurable data. These principles form the foundation of load cell design and are critical to ensuring accurate and repeatable results across demanding applications.

By first exploring the theory behind our systems, the students could better understand what they would later see in our facility, where raw materials are transformed into calibrated force sensors.

From Metal to Measurement

Following the introduction, the students were invited into our workshop and laboratory to see how the concepts translate into real engineering processes.

The tour followed the journey of a load cell as it moves through production, starting off with CNC machining , where raw materials are shaped to exact tolerances. From there, the students observed several stages that transform these machined parts into functional measurement devices.

These stages included laser marking and welding, strain gauge bonding, and the delicate soldering and wiring required to connect the sensor elements. They also saw how environmental sealing protects the internal components, ensuring the sensors can operate reliably in demanding industrial environments.

The final stage of the process involves calibration and verification, where each load cell is carefully tested to ensure it delivers accurate and repeatable measurements before leaving the facility.

Throughout the tour, the students were able to observe our technicians carrying out real production work, providing a genuine insight into the level of precision, skill and attention to detail required in specialist engineering.

Learning from Early-Career Engineers

The students then took part in an informal Q&A session with two of our early-career engineers, both of whom originally joined PCM as apprentices/placement students.

This discussion gave them an opportunity to hear directly about the transition from education into a hands-on environment. Topics ranged from the level of responsibility given early in their careers to the pace of learning required when working on real projects and customer applications.

The session also highlighted the benefits of working within PCM, where engineers are often involved across the full lifecycle of a project, from design and manufacturing through to testing and delivery.

By sharing their own experiences, our engineers were able to give the visiting students a clearer picture of what a career in precision engineering can look like in practice.

Discussing Future Opportunities

The visit concluded with a series of short speed interviews, which gave students the opportunity to speak one-on-one with us about upcoming apprenticeship and placement opportunities.

The sessions were energetic and engaging, with thoughtful questions from the students and genuine enthusiasm, covering professional opportunities within the industry.

Why Experiences Like This Matter

For many engineering students, opportunities to experiece a working environment are still relatively rare. While modern engineering education increasingly incorporates powerful digital tools and simulation, seeing real manufacturing processes and measurement systems in action provides an important layer of understanding that cannot always be gained in the classroom.

Experiences like this help connect theoretical learning with the practical realities of engineering. We would like to thank the team at the WMG Academy , for supporting initiatives that bring students closer to industry.

About The Role

As a Mechanical Engineer within PCM’s highly regarded technical team, you will play a key role in the development and evolution of our new, market-leading standard product range. In addition to supporting day-to-day engineering activities such as mathematical calculations, CAD design and technical documentation, this role has a strong emphasis on analytical engineering and cutting-edge product development.

You will work closely with our machining, strain gauging and calibration teams to translate customer requirements and market needs into robust, high-performance mechanical designs. The role will suit an engineer who enjoys combining theoretical understanding with practical application - using analysis, simulation, and test data to continuously refine and improve product performance. Your work will directly influence the competitiveness, manufacturability, and long-term reliability of PCM’s next-generation load cell products.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare, amend, and maintain detailed CAD models and engineering drawings for load cells, calibration fixtures, and associated assemblies.

- Produce and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, and controlled technical documentation in support of machining, strain gauging and calibration activities.

- Design and 3D print production tooling to support efficient, repeatable manufacture.

- Play a central role in the development of PCM’s standard load cell product range, from concept through to validated design.

- Conduct market and competitor research to help define product requirements, performance targets, and design constraints.

- Perform theoretical analysis to support load path design, stress distribution, stiffness, and fatigue performance.

- Carry out finite element analysis (FEA) to assess stress, strain, deflection, and failure modes, using results to guide and refine designs.

- Develop, validate and maintain coded mechanical design calculators to support rapid, consistent product development.

- Continuously analyse calibration and performance test data to identify opportunities for improvement.

- Support design reviews, root cause investigations, and continuous improvement activities.

- Author technical reports, whitepapers and application notes.

- Liaise with suppliers and manufacturing partners to support cost-effective production.

- Help maintain and evolve internal software tools and automated processes using MATLAB and VBA.

- Contribute to the long-term technical roadmap for PCM’s load cell product portfolio.

About The Role

As an Instrumentation & Control Engineer within PCM’s highly regarded technical team, you will play a central role in supporting the design, manufacture, and delivery of high-precision load measurement solutions. Working closely with production, calibration, suppliers, and customers, you will contribute across the full project lifecycle - from initial concept and quotation through to manufacture, calibration, and despatch.

This role combines detailed engineering design with hands-on instrumentation expertise. In addition to generating high-quality CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation, you will act as PCM’s internal specialist for instrumentation and control, supporting both day-to-day internal operations and customer applications, alongside cutting-edge research and development. Accuracy, methodical working practices, and a strong systems-level understanding will be essential, as your work directly underpins the performance, reliability, and traceability of our products.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare, amend, and maintain CAD models and detailed engineering drawings for load cells and strain gauge installations.

- Produce, manage, and control Bills of Materials (BOMs), specifications, and build instructions for production technicians, to ensure consistency and quality.

- Act as PCM’s specialist in Instrumentation & Control, supporting the selection, development, and integration of market-leading instrumentation including displays, data loggers, amplifiers and digitisers.

- Take responsibility for HBM data acquisition systems within our UKAS-accredited calibration laboratory.

- Liaise with customers and suppliers via telephone, email, and face-to-face meetings to provide technical support, recommendations, and fault diagnosis.

- Support customers with test data processing, interpretation, and reporting.

- Contribute to PCB design for standard load cell product ranges to improve manufacturability and scalability.

About The Role

With throughput gradually increasing, our talented and highly regarded strain gauge installation division is in permanent need of additional resources.

As a valued member of a small close-knit team that is continually pushing the bounds of what’s technically possible, you’ll be required to work accurately and efficiently with utmost precision, routinely producing fully traceable installations of the highest quality for the critical applications we’re entrusted with by our discerning clients.

Whether it’s an intricate compression load cell from our standard product range, a bespoke multi-axis sensor, or a complex customer component of extremely high value, we’ll require you to assemble and test items in strict accordance with work instructions, test procedures, engineering drawings and CAD models, before documenting your work accordingly.

About The Role

Since its inception in 2018, our UKAS accredited calibration laboratory has been going from strength to strength, and is now regarded by many as the leading force calibration facility in the UK. Today, the services it delivers continue to gain great popularity, due to the unusually fast turnarounds we’re able to offer, without compromising on quality. Now, we’re in permanent need of additional resources so that we can maintain this momentum we’ve worked tirelessly to build.

As a calibration technician you’ll be trusted to operate our lowly utilised state-of-the-art electro-mechanical and hydraulic servo-controlled test frames, which were recently custom built to a specification that meets the strictest accuracy and ease-of-use requirements. Highly specialist R&D projects will also demand tactful use of our hand press and deadweight set-ups to maintain ultimate loading control.

Working efficiently but thoroughly, without taking shortcuts, on load measurement devices of all shapes and sizes, will be key to your success.

Key Responsibilities

- Calibration of load cells and instrumentation to customer specification.

- Set up and operation of test machinery.

- Handling load cells and precisely positioning them within the test environment.

- Applying appropriate forces via the test machinery and capturing the data produced.

- Recording test results within excel via accurate data input.

- Inspection of mechanical and electrical instrumentation to ensure they function as required.

- Carrying out repair and soldering work to load cells.

- Maintaining a safe working environment by adhering to strict safety protocols and maintenance guidelines.

The Challenge

Precise & Reliable Load Measurement

Lloyds Beal, a key supplier of ground support equipment to the aviation sector, approached us with a highly specialised requirement. They were developing a bespoke stress jacking system used during critical phases of aircraft maintenance. These systems needed to precisely apply heavy loads, ranging from 30 to over 110 tonnes, to specific points on the aircraft, enabling engineers to safely disassemble and reassemble vital structural components.

At the heart of their solution was a 55-tonne hydraulic ram . To ensure absolute control and safety, Lloyds Beal required real-time load feedback from each jack point. This meant integrating a digital load cell beneath every ram that could not only handle the significant forces involved, but also deliver accurate, repeatable readings under demanding conditions. The challenge was ensuring that the load cells could be tailored to the unique geometries of the jack assemblies and meet strict aerospace maintenance requirements.

Our Solution

CNC Compression Load Cells

Understanding the application’s criticality and the performance demands, we recommended our CNC Compression Load Cell. Known for its rugged build and low-profile design, the CNC is engineered for high-force applications where space is limited and reliability is paramount. Its stainless steel spring element, which is enclosed within a strong thick-walled case and sealed to IP65, made it well-suited to the environment and duty cycle expected in ground support operations.

We supplied 5 off 75t CNC Compression Load Cells for integration beneath each hydraulic ram. In addition, 5 PSDS digital indicators were provided to offer Lloyds Beal real-time visual feedback for each individual jack. Overall, the supplied units would ensure engineers could monitor and control applied loads with precision throughout the maintenance process.

Machining The Load Cells

Robust, Identical Components With Zero Imperfections

The machining process for the 3 components that comprise each load cell build saw raw stainless steel billets transformed into something exceptional using our top of the range Mazak Mill-Turn CNC machine. Dimensional tolerances were tightly controlled to ensure proper interfacing between the load cells and the hydraulic rams, especially considering the custom nature of Lloyds Beal’s jacking solution. As each load cell would be mounted in a unique location with slightly different design constraints, attention to detail was vital. The result: 15 individually verified, visually stunning components ready for the next stage.

The Strain Gauging Process

Creating A Work Of Art Under The Microscope

Once machined, each load cell moved to our dedicated strain gauging laboratory. Here, high quality foil strain gauges were bonded to the spring elements, in positions that would ensure optimum sensitivity and accuracy - it's a process that requires meticulous preparation, steady hands, and a controlled environment to avoid any contamination or misalignment. The strain gauges were then wired and tested for continuity and signal integrity, before being encapsulated for protection during operation.

Accurate Calibration

Full Traceability & Assurance

The final step was calibration : all 5 load cells were calibrated to the highest standards in our UKAS-accredited ISO 17025 laboratory. This involved using our 5000kN hydraulic, servo-controlled test frame to accurately apply a series of 5 point 3 run load cycles, as well as custom-coded HBM catman software to capture the necessary readings. Comprehensive calibration certificates were issued with each device, giving Lloyds Beal full traceability and confidence in the performance of the system.

The Final Product

On-Time & Up To Scratch

The completed load cells and digital indicators were delivered on time with zero issues. According to Lloyds Beal, integration into their jacking system was seamless. The real-time feedback provided by our load cells allowed engineers to apply force with confidence and precision, which is critical when working around safety-critical aircraft components.

The system performed exactly as intended, with no anomalies reported during use. Our CNC Compression Load Cells proved once again why they’re trusted in high-stake applications, delivering performance, reliability, and adaptability when it matters most.

We're delighted to share that our engineers all passed their British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM) training with distinction!

Jacob Lord and Harry Chester, passed Level 1, demonstrating a high level of skill in making strain gauge installations that can be used with confidence. Jack Chester passed Level 2 and can now prepare detailed instructions for, and supervise installations. Jack can also use gauges to obtain accurate and reliable strain measurements in loaded components.

Bi-Directional Pancake Load Cell

The TC4 bi-directional pancake load cell is a low-profile device for tension and compression measurement during static or dynamic testing.

With a fully laser welded, stainless steel assembly, the TC4 load cell offers high resilience to wear and tear, as well as IP67 sealing.

In addition, the TC4 is rated to ISO 376 Class 1, making it ideally suited for test rig applications.

The PLC is a bi-directional pancake load cell designed for monitoring both tension and compression in static or dynamic test rig applications . Its shear web design permits a degree of misaligned loading with minimal effect on the load cell output.

This load cell can be customised through dimensional modification, addition of a redundant bridge, temperature range, sealing, etc.

An alternative to the PLC is the TC4 pancake load cell, which is of similar design and is considered an ‘off the shelf’ product.

The SLP is a shackle load pin for tension measurement. It is designed around the Crosby G-2130 bolt type anchor shackle, although this can be changed.

An anti-rotation plate, nut, split pin or R clip, and centralising bobbin are all included as standard to help ensure the SLP operates as intended.

Our shackle load pins can be supplied hard-wired with a length of cable or with radio telemetry output.

The RT2 is a rotating torque transducer with a key slot design, ideal for measuring rotational torsion at up to 4000rpm in rotating machines, test benches and automatic tightening applications.

Standard mV/V output from the RT2 measures clockwise and counterclockwise torque. The design uses slip ring technology which will require periodic maintenance - this is a simple exercise which can be carried out by the operator.

Options available include square couplings, an integrated speed/angle encoder, as well as ±10V analogue output.

Applications

The RT2 measures CLOCKWISE torque with a POSITIVE output in tension or ANTICLOCKWISE torque with NEGATIVE output in tension.

For a correctly operational system it is necessary to prepare:

2x shaft couplings with a bellow or disk pack to suit the nominal torque and rotating speed (max 4000 rpm)
1x adjustable support that allows you to align the rT2 with the two junction shafts (tolerance 0.1mm) during the installation phase.
The manufacturer suggests using double-jointed shaft couplings from MAYR GmbH - https://www.mayr.com/en.

The assembly of the couplings to the RT2 must be done whilst disconnected from the machine (system) with the transducer only connected to a display, thus verifying in real time that no unwanted torque, bending or tension are generated which may overload the transducer.

Mount the RT2 with its couplings on the support, align the system along its own axis and connect the system. Even in this phase, care must be taken that the measure showed on the display does not exceed the nominal torque rating of the transducer.

Strain Gauge Digital Signal Conditioner

The DSCUSB strain gauge to USB converter is a compact, high performance strain gauge digital signal conditioner with USB connectivity, aimed at applications which require high-accuracy measurement repeatability.

Ideal for all strain gauge bridge based sensors, the device simply plugs into your PC, where data can be acquired and manipulated by accompanying software. This removes the need for amplifiers, filters and multimeters. No additional power supply is required either, as power is drawn from the USB bus.

Its rugged ABS IP50 enclosure makes the DSCUSB suitable for all environments.

Although ideal for 1 to 1 interface, the DSCUSB can also connect to multiple sensors through the use of a suitable hub. Miniature Analogue Amplifier

The ICA strain gauge amplifiers are a very popular range of miniature analogue signal conditioners. These amplifiers offer a high-performance in miniature PCB format, designed specifically for fitting inside load cells or within the optional ILE inline housing. ICA amplifiers convert mV/V signal to 4-20mA, 0-10V, 0-5V or ±10V output.

The entire ICA range offers high stability and fast response. Available in 6 versions, the ICA has two performance categories S and H (S = Industrial. H = Very High Stability).

The majority available are of the ICAH range which offers very low drift over wide operating temperatures. The ICA5S is the only ICA amplifier that is only available in the industrial range.

Intuitive Load Cell Panel Meter

The INT4-L is an ideal general purpose weighing indicator for 4 wire and 6 wire load cells. These are among the easiest of programmable panel meters to commission, programmable using the front panel push buttons which may then be locked with a rear switch. The Intuitive series offers high precision with long term reliability, available with AC or DC power supply options.

The main function of the INT4-L is to give a numeric readout of the variable being monitored and includes an excitation power output to power the load cell directly. Various optional output modules are also available to give alarm relay outputs, analogue output or digital communications, or any combination of these options.

The INT4-L has been designed to mount into a protective enclosure which will protect users from contact with power and signal wiring. These panel meters must be installed fully assembled, and must be installed according to local electrical installation rules.
